Basics of Cognitive Functions pt.2
So, let’s finally talk about the functions themselves, one by one, taking a good look at how they work, what they mean, and how you may be using them. Though it’s important to keep in mind, the way a specific function would manifest could change depending on it’s position in the pattern, how well it’s developed, and how it is influenced by the other functions.
There are two kinds of cognitive functions; Perceiving Functions, and Judging Functions.
Perceiving Functions consist of Ne, Ni, Se, and Si, they are the functions concerned with taking in information.
Judging Functions consist of Te, Ti, Fe, and Fi, they are the functions concerned with data and action.
Extraverted Intuition (Ne)
Extraverted Intuition, or Ne for short, focuses on possibility and potential, working similarly to a network of constantly branching ideas, or interpretations. It is commonly viewed as the function for innovation or brainstorming, with its focus on creativity, and spreading out all the various possibilities.
Ne is the primary function of the ENTP & ENFP types.
Introverted Intuition (Ni)
Introverted Intuition, or Ni for short, follows the same principle as Ne, but in reverse. As opposed to thinking of many possibilities and ideas from one source, Ni takes in various background information to come to a single grand conclusion, typically manifesting as an “aha!” moment of realization, often without being sure of how they came to it.
Ni is the primary function of the INFJ & INTJ types.
Extraverted Sensing (Se)
Extraverted Sensing, or Se for short, is all about the present moment and all of the physical sensations that come with it. Se is focused on taking in everything that is happening right now in the world around them, extracting relevant information and positive experiences from what’s right there in front of them.
Se is the primary function of the ESTP & ESFP types.
Introverted Sensing (Si)
Introverted Sensing, or Si for short, stockpiles past experiences and information to be used in the past and future as necessary. Similarly to how Ni is all about “How it will be”, Si is about “How it has been”, using the past as a gauge for present action. Si is commonly seen as the function focused on tradition and stability.
Si is the primary function of the ISFJ & ISTJ types.
Extraverted Thinking (Te)
Extraverted Thinking, or Te for short, is known for being all about organization, productivity, and efficiency. Using things such as systems or schedules they create order, working diligently to achieve their goals. The core of Te is all about planning, factual logic, and how to use those best to accomplish all of your objectives.
Te is the primary function of the ENTJ & ESTJ types.
Introverted Thinking (Ti)
Introverted Thinking, or Ti for short, is commonly thought of as the function concerned with what “makes sense”. It uses rational analysis to make deductions and figure out the specifics of any problem or situation. Unlike Te which is more concerned with broader logical systems that can apply to many situations, Ti is more concerned with individual specifics and figuring out how they work or why.
Ti is the primary function of the INTP & ISTP types.
Extraverted Feeling (Fe)
Extraverted Feeling, or Fe for short, is most involved with “social norms”, understanding what others value and feel. Fe is usually related to empathy, politeness, or charm, concerned with being accepted by others, and in turn making sure that the group is well maintained and balanced, so that everyone is taken care of.
Fe is the primary function of the ENFJ & ESFJ types.
Introverted Feeling (Fi)
Introverted Feeling, or Fi for short, is similar to Fe in it’s regard for values, only it works as more of an internal set of morals and principles. As opposed to acting on the values of the group and what others think and feel, Fi focuses on it’s own values to judge whether something is authentic or worth believing in.
Fi is the primary function of the INFP & ISFP types.
Primary – Inferior Function Relationships
It’s important to remember that all of the functions within your type feed into one another, and that they’re all necessary for proper development.
Ne – Si
If your primary function is Ne, you wouldn’t be able to think about all the possibilities of the future, without having the Si knowledge of the past guiding it.
If your primary function is Si, then Ne would be there to let you know when it’s necessary to make some change to avoid stagnation.
Ni – Se
If your primary function is Ni, you would need to rely on the Se present moment to gather the background information that’s necessary to reach a Ni conclusion.
If your primary function is Se, Ni would guide you to a meaningful future or greater understanding of all the things you do.
Te – Fi
If your primary function is Te, it’s important to give Fi a voice to give your actions meaning and value.
If your primary function is Fi, you will have to use Te to bring your Fi values and beliefs outside into the world through action, and balancing your ideals with reality.
Ti – Fe
If your primary function is Ti, Fe is necessary to prevent you from becoming too closed off and jaded, allowing you to consider outside influences to support your Ti.
If your primary function is Fe, then Ti would bring you balance with its focus on critical thought and problem solving.
